Beautiful, multi-ethnic people, vivacious and full of wit. Diverse, multi-religious culture. Carnival and Bacchanal. Calypso and Soca music. Steelpan and Panorama. An abundance of creative riches. Tropical rainforests, mountains, waterfalls, rivers and beaches. Plenty of sun and rain. The best food in the Caribbean.
But isn’t there an ugly underbelly to the twin-island nation? There is Crime. Theft. Extortion. Kidnapping. Corruption. A continuous State of Emergency. We have gone from Lockdown to Lockup. Bandit State, S.O.E., P.D.O., S.O.S. “Is this the Wild West”?

Roberta Stoddart’s paintings have been described as brave, dense, bold, thoroughly
executed, and deeply felt. Intense and disturbing, they stimulate questions about our
collective prejudices, our psychological spaces, and our notions of belonging.
Central to her work as an artist is seeking to make sense of Caribbean pathologies.
“My work considers many questions, in my endeavour to understand and survive
deeply felt historical wounds and everyday tensions. By striving to authentically map
my own journey of awakening and healing, I hope to stimulate conversations around
what is universal.”
Stoddart has published two books, Seamless Spaces (2000) and The Storyteller (2007), produced seven solo exhibitions, and participated in important local, regional and international group shows.
In 2026, the Wereldmuseum, Netherlands, acquired Roberta’s painting “Sleepwalkers” (2009-2017) for their permanent collection and for their upcoming exhibition Leef Surrealisme in Rotterdam (September, 2026). The Museum has invited Roberta to attend the event, and to give an Artist Talk. Born in Jamaica, she lives and works in Trinidad.
