Sediments explores the artist’s continued fascination with Carnival action and its ability to intensify a sense of rooting and attachment to space. Drawing inspiration from geological diagrams and concepts of the rhizome, Alonzo considers the extent to which the energy and rituals of performance are absorbed through and housed by, the land. A land which has compressed between the layers of its bedrock, the genetic code of our history and a shared sense of belonging. Much like nutrient rich sedimentary soil, the remnants of Mas nourish and sustains us, representing an ode to aliveness, to resilience and to emancipation of the collective spirit.
Parallel to this, the artist examines the female body as a site of liberation. She speculates on how the boundaries of corporeal autonomy and spatial engagement are navigated through the development of multifaceted, female storytellers. The viewer is encouraged to question whether power can be derived from the creation of new or alternate personas which exist (only) on the Carnival road.
